Herbalife is a global network marketing company that sells weight management, nutritional supplement and personal care products intended to support a healthy lifestyle. Herbalife products are sold in 61 countries through a network of more than one million independent distributors. More information can be found at www.herbalife.com. Herbalife offers a direct selling business opportunity, based on the network marketing principle of compensation, otherwise known as Multi Level Marketing. 1.1 The Brand Multi Level Marketing is a business model that combines direct marketing with franchising. Herbalife is now the premier wellness and nutrition company in the world with a commitment to quality and high standards, both in products, research & development & ethical business practice. Run a search on Google to see some of the different perceptions the company has had in the last decade. Due to the nature of the direct selling market, where royalty and bonuses are paid for production volume, retailing, recruiting & retaining some distributors resort to high impact direct marketing techniques for example the 'Work From Home Signs.' In the recent past Herbalife has grown into a large successful corporation quoted on the New York Stock Exchange that is accountable to shareholders and regulators, so positive public relations and ethical business practice are high priorities on the corporate agenda. Chief Executive Officer Michael O Johnson, winner of MarketWatch CEO of the year is moulding the business into a magical and fun experience for distributors and prospective customers. The company is rapidly building momentum and interest by growing the brand and generating buzz about the products. Herbalife has positioned itself now to appeal to a younger generation of distributors, who have the characteristics needed to propel the products and the business opportunity further through the direct selling market place. These characteristics are what Herbalife describe as Generation H. As one of the largest network marketing companies in the world, Herbalife has recently bolstered its presence at fitness and sporting events through partnerships with cutting-edge properties such as the AVP Pro Beach Volleyball Tour, the Tour of California bicycle road race, the Los Angeles Galaxy, and the Home Depot Center, as well as triathlons and other fitness and sporting events around the world. "Sporting and fitness events give us a tremendous opportunity to promote our brand in an environment where Herbalife distributors can reach new customers outside their current channel of distribution," said Greg Probert, president and chief operating officer of Herbalife 1.2 The Products Herbalife's products are scientifically developed by leading experts such as Dr David Hebur, the Head of The Centre for Human Nutrition at the University of California Los Angeles. Herbalifes' UCLA Lab, Center for Human Nutrition Herbalife group their products into three categories: weight management, inner nutrition, and Outer Nutrition. Herbalife weight loss products are often sold in programs, which are comprised of a series of related products designed to simplify weight management and nutrition for their consumers and maximize their distributors' cross-selling opportunities. These programs target specific consumer market segments, such as women, men, mature adults, sports enthusiasts, as well as weight-loss and weight-management customers and individuals looking to enhance their overall well-being. Nutrition Science-Based Product Development. Herbalife have significantly increased their emphasis and investment in science-based product development in the fields of weight management, nutrition, and personal care during the past three years. They have an internal team of scientists dedicated to continually evaluating opportunities to enhance their existing products and to develop new science-based products. These new product development efforts are reviewed by prominent doctors and scientists who constitute their Scientific Advisory Board and Medical Advisory Board. In addition, in the past three years they provided donations to assist in the establishment of the UCLA Lab. The UCLA Lab provides opportunities for Herbalife to access cutting-edge science in herbal research and nutrition. The science of weight management & nutrition is illustrated by Herbalifes assembly of a dedicated internal product development team composed of leading scientists as well as its recent establishment of a Nutrition Advisory Board. The Nutrition Advisory Board is comprised of 17 renowned international scientists who are experts in the fields of obesity and human nutrition, and who conduct product research and advise on product concepts. Members of this board include David Heber, M.D., Ph.D., Professor of Medicine and Public Health at the UCLA School of Medicine, Director of the UCLA Center for Human Nutrition and Director of the UCLA Center for Dietary Supplement Research in Botanicals, and Louis Ignarro, Ph.D., Distinguished Professor of Pharmacology at the UCLA School of Medicine and Nobel Laureate in Medicine. In addition, Herbalife Nutritionl Advisory Board is comprised of three leading scientists and medical doctors, who provide training on product usage and give health news updates through Herbalife literature, the internet, and live training events around the world. 1.3 Multi - Level Marketing, Pyramid Schemes? MLM has been associated with get rich quick pyramid schemes, these usually involve the taking of payment for information on how to get rich, and also the recruiting of people into a scheme. In a ponzi marketing pyramid no one wins - only the architect has profited by defrauding others with promises of wealth or reward. There are claims that Herbalife is the architect of a global organised ponzi marketing scheme, these claims are opinion and as facts show are false. Please do not assume that earnings come easy. As a Herbalife Independent Distributor you have to earn your worth.....though.....you will be rewarded generously! Disclaimer: Incomes are applicable to the individuals presented and are not a guarantee of your income, nor are they typical . Any earnings will depend on factors including your business skills and the effort and time you put into the business Not everyone will make it in the business, and earnings claims by some distributors may be exaggerated in order for them to succeed in recruiting new people to the business which is a reflection on an independent traders integrity and not on Herbalife as a corporation. The business opportunity is a micro franchise opportunity. 1.4 My Own Experience I do not want to mislead anyone with exaggerated earnings claims, however I do want to build an organisation & advance through the levels. This is fun, different levels to reach - incentives, holidays, goal setting, something to aim for and world class sports contests to go to and participate in (all around a full time 9 - 5 job) People can and do earn more than £70,000 per year from the Herbalife compensation plan, but there are over 1 million distributors - many of them do not. Like any other franchisee and sole trader earnings don't come easily. To succeed as a Herbalife distributor, use of the products and an understanding of prospective customers is essential. Perseverance and dedication are also qualities of successful distributors in the direct selling business as the ability to cope with rejection is crucial to achieve sales volume. In direct marketing, exposure and number of people spoken to quantifies sales success. The sampling opportunities that Herbalife provide for example at the AVP Pro Beach Volley Ball in the USA or at the Gerardmer Triathlon in France are excellent examples of how distributors engage with their target market. The next chapter of this webpage will explain how Herbalife motivate their independent, self employed, part time or full time sales force from every walk of life. 1.5 Distributor Motivation The way that Herbalife is organised means that if you are thinking about taking on the business opportunity, then training & the products is provided centrally by Herbalife - they have extensive IT systems in place & the ability to disseminate information over various media's for example the internet, such as the Herbalife Broadcast Network or in Literature such as in the Today Magazine, a monthly supplement published to communicate all things Herbalife. Herbalife believes that motivation and training are key elements in distributor success. Herbalife provides the tools you need to take your Herbalife micro franchise as far as you want to go. Proven success training resources include Success Training Seminars (STS's) where people get to learn everything from sales and product retailing to recruiting. For people interested in the business opportunity, most learn more information at Herbalife Opportunity Meetings (HOM's) which are organised locally by recruiters. To start in the business distributors buy an International Business Pack for £75, which includes business manuals, brochures/leaflets on the products and DVD's designed to inspire. Initially distributors buy the products at a 25% discount, but trade their way up to 50% discount and qualify for Supervisor status, which is sometimes encouraged to be purchased outright for those that are serious about using Herbalife to make an additional income. Depending on sales volume various distributors qualify for Leadership Development Weekends in holiday locations such as Bologne in the EMEA region and Boca Raton Beach Resort in the Americas 2005. There are also other incentives offered by the company to successful distributors such as special Apple iPods in Herbalife colours. Herbalife has extensive online systems to disseminate information about products, training, provide advertising materials, administration documents and keep distributors motivated. The CEO Michael O Johnson addresses distributors around the world by video broadcast over the internet, and in the corporate magazine called 'Today Magazine' every month. Many of the 1 million distributors within Herbalife from around the world are passionate about the company believing it is a magical opportunity for them to increase their income while lowering their waist lines. Attending the STS's and other training days it is almost cult like the amount of enthusiasm that is poured out regarding the products and business opportunity. There is no doubt that with the SAB and MAB in place and the highest commitment to quality in research and development and manufacturing the Herbalife products are of the highest quality (which is also reflected in the price consumers pay); however Herbalife is not a household name, there is no brand recognition which may impinge the success of direct sales marketeers especially as the products are expensive. In other areas of the direct selling industry brands such as Virgin (Virgin Vie), Avon , and Ian Thorpe are using their household recognition to promote direct selling products. Since 2004 Herbalife began its brand building and sponsorship activities with the aim of associating the company with health, fitness, and sports. It contracted Velocity Marketing to manage its portfolio of world class sampling and sponsorship properties which include the AVP Pro Beach Volley Ball Tour, National Australian Beach Volley Ball Tour, Michelob ULTRA London Triathlon and the Ironman France. These events expose the Herbalife products and opportunity to hundreds of thousands of consumers directly and indirectly through television footage, with a requirement for health and wellness, energy, and nutrition. As a result of these activities Herbalife is becoming a household name. It is burnishing its previous bad image and is now appealing to a younger, health educated audience who have been brought up with government warnings and media publications about the obesity crisis and health and beauty pressure. This younger generation (generation h) are also internet savvy, creative, and more dissatisfied with the idea they should conform to a life of work, mortgage payments, and after 40 years of so called 'work related stress' retirement. The sports sponsorships properties from around the world also provide opportunities for distributors to sample products, earn leads and participate in the event which is inspiring because of the buzz and atmosphere that has been generated.
1.6 Compensation
Beside the marketing, the buzz, and the products one of the main motivators for people in direct selling is the compensation plan. Herbalife boasts one of the most generous in the business. Renowned business philosopher and Herbalife speaker Jim Rohn talks of the 3 main philosophies for the increase of wealth. Say a worker wants to increase his wealth there are 3 ways he can do that.
- Ask his boss for a pay rise ( but he has no control over the outcome )
- Wait for the government to put up the National Minimum wage ( he may be waiting a long time )
- Go on strike
Neither of these methods will substantially increase the wealth of the worker and so Jim Rohn talks of a fourth philosophy - productivity. The worker that puts in the most amount of time and effort, and accrues that highest amount of productivity volume will be rewarded the most. Herbalifes business opportunity therefore is about taking control and getting back from work what you put in. The more sales you get, the more you will be paid. The more people you introduce to the business, the more you will earn from organisation volume.
